What gravel to use?

The gravel/substrate you use will depend on a number of factors, what fish you intend to keep, what filtration method you are using, planting requirements etc etc.  The best place to obtain you gravel from is your local pet shop.  It comes pre-treated and just requires a thorough rinsing before use in the aquarium, unlike gravel purchased from say, a builders merchant.  Although this is a cheaper option, it is a lot more hassle in the long run.

The 2 main choices for the floor of your aquarium are Sand or/and gravel.  Both can be purchased in a wide variety of colours, ranging from natural to bright pinks and greens.  I personally prefer the natural "uncoloured" version.  Not only does it look better, but it creates a more natural environment for the inhabitants of your aquarium.

Sand - Fairly obvious what this is, the same stuff as you get on the beach.   Looks very nice on the bottom of your aquarium, but can be a hassle to keep clean.   It is unsuitable for use with an undergravel filtration system and has been known to cause some bottom dwelling fish problems.  It is available in a variety of colours and is easy to plants into.

Gravel - Not only can this be purchased in a variety of colours, but also a variety of diameters of pebble size.  Ranging from fine gravel  (approx. 1mm across) to large almost pebbles of between 5mm and 10mm across.  This can be used with and undergravel filtration system but it is advisable not to use pieces above about 5mm or 6mm across.

Whatever you decide to use ensure it is thoroughly clean before pacing it in your tank.
